Introduction
Titanium dioxide is stable, non-reactive, has not got corrosive properties and it is non-flammable. In a pure form, it is non-toxic and contains only traces of heavy metals. Due to sub-micron size of particles, titanium dioxide pigments have got a natural tendency to create dust. Despite the fact that there is no evidence of carcinogenic effects on human being caused by breathing in of fine particles of titanium dioxide, precautions and safety measures have to be taken towards the respiratory system in situations of increased dusting. A short contact of pigment with skin or eyes does not cause irritation. Longer exposure should be avoided in order to prevent drying out of tissues by small particles.
Bearing the above in mind, titanium dioxide pigments are not dangerous in principle. They are not present on lists of hazardous substances. They also do not need any specific requirements imposed by the regulations of ADR, IATA, IMCO or RID for international road, sea or railway transport. Thus, they are safe in transport, application and utilisation.
